Director of Music | Vocal Specialist | Choral Conductor
Marten is an experienced music educator, conductor, and vocal specialist, holding a Bachelor of Music (Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting), along with postgraduate studies in Music Education, Christian Ministry, and Educational Leadership.
His conducting studies include mentorship under Andrew Wailes (Royal Melbourne Philharmonic), Dr. Ian Burk (ACU), and Dr. Geoffrey Cox (St Patrick’s Cathedral). He has participated in choral masterclasses with leading international educators, including Dr. Rodney Eichenberger and Dr. André Thomas (Florida State University), and Associate Professor Carl Crossin (Elder Conservatorium).
As a vocal educator, Marten has trained extensively with Loris Synan (Monash University) and Susan Breen-Clark (University of Melbourne), developing expertise in vocal pedagogy and performance across classical, music theatre, and contemporary genres.
Marten is currently the Director of Music at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School — a leading centre for choral music and music education in Melbourne. Prior to this, he spent over a decade at Wantirna College as Leader of Performing Arts and Head of Vocal & Choral Studies, where he helped shape one of Victoria’s most successful Instrumental Music programs.
As a conductor, Marten served for over 10 years as the Principal Artistic Director of Melbourne’s Chime Choir, a professional-level ensemble known for its dynamic performances, corporate engagements, and international touring. He continues to work with Chime as Associate Director. A highlight of this work was a 2018 performance at Carnegie Hall, New York, supported by Distinguished Concerts International.
Marten has conducted and directed a wide range of musical theatre productions, including Les Misérables, Shrek, The Wiz, Hairspray, Matilda, Beauty and the Beast, and many more. He is equally at home in the choral, studio, and theatrical worlds, with additional experience as a session singer, voice coach, and adjudicator.
His guest work spans across Australia, with organisations such as the Australian Children’s Choir, National Institute for Performing Arts Australia, and numerous schools and eisteddfods. He is a committee member of the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing (ANATS), a mentor conductor with the Australian National Choral Association (ANCA), and a registered teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Marten is passionate about empowering young singers — helping them build healthy vocal technique, musical confidence, and strong ensemble skills through informed, engaging, and student-centred teaching.
